Salvation

What must I do to be saved?

This question has been asked for over 2,000 years, starting from the day of pentecost after Peter preached his first sermon [Acts 2:37]. It has also been the catalyst for much debate among the religious community and, unfortunately, created a lot of confusion in the minds of those who are seeking the Lord.

The good news is that God’s plan of salvation is not difficult, it is clearly outlined in the scriptures and very easy to understand. Additionally, we have many examples of people being converted (i.e. saved) in the book of Acts [chapters 2, 8, 9, 10, 16, 18 and 19].

#1 – You must believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, and that He came to earth, lived a sinless life, and then gave himself over to be sacrificed for the forgiveness of sin.

“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:6-8 (ESV)

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” – Philippians 2:5-8 (ESV)

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” – 1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)

#2 – You must repent of your sins. This goes beyond just having remorse for sinful behavior, it means you must turn away from the sin in your life.

“But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago” – Acts 3:18-21 (ESV)

“The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead” – Acts 17:30-31 (ESV)

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” – 2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

#3 – You must confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

“So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven” – Matthew 10:32-33 (ESV)

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim) because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved” – Romans 10:8-10 (ESV)

“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.” – 1 John 4:15 (ESV)

#4 – You must be immersed in the waters of baptism.

“Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'” – Acts 2:37-38 (ESV)

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” – Romans 6:3-4 (ESV)

“And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.” – Acts 22:16 (ESV)

There are many other scriptures to support each of these points and we encourage you to read and study them yourself. If you have questions or concerns we would love the opportunity to study the Bible with you.
